Caly Chhin
Bio:
From: Northern CaliforniaGraduated from: University of the Pacific ‘08
Degree: BA in History
Prior to her acceptance for AmeriCorps VISTA, Caly was working with children in the after school program both as a tutor and as a facilitator. It was a surprise to her that when she came on board, she found herself working with an after school program. Caly can be described as a daydreamer. Her mind wonders when something attracts her attention. Her friends think that she has adult ADHD but what do they know. She enjoys reading multiple books at a time and listening to music (everything except classical that is).
Service
Caly started AmeriCorps VISTA in April 2009. She is the Site Resource Coordinator for Sunrise Elementary School. Since school is almost out, part of her summer will be focused on the 21st Century Leadership Camp and Music Camp taking place at Sunrise. The rest of the summer will be spent on tentative programming for the 2009-2010 year.
Impact Story
Part of job shadowing included facilitating an event sponsored by Communities In School - Line Up for Learning. It is a curriculum adopted by some schools in which students completed the activities and followed the three rules: Healthy Attitude, Healthy Brain, Healthy Choices. The students who completed the curriculum would be able to attend a Diamondback’s game. On game day, the students were excited and came with signs cheering on their team and for many of these students this was their first baseball experience. It was important to see the children (over 1000) rewarded for all their hard work and positive choices they made throughout the year to attend the game.
